How Do RESETs Restore the Nervous System?
A friend recently wrote me a letter and asked me the next query:
“How do resets refresh the nervous system?”
It’s a great query. One which others have asked. So, I assumed I’d share the reply I wrote back to my friend as it might be helpful information to you as well. Here we go…
I often have a look at Pressing RESET like turning on lights. But you must know that I’m easy and I wish to be really good at knowing the way to turn the lights on. I don’t necessarily understand the entire science behind how electrons travel in a circuit and truly make the lights activate. But this doesn’t stop me from trouble shooting most lights!
Having said that, my understanding of neuroscience may be very surface level at best. But, the gait pattern and midline crossing movements actually create neural connections across the corpus callosum, connecting each hemispheres of the brain, making the brain more efficient. The more we use and live in these patterns the more we myelinate those neural nets and connections. Using them maintains them. In the event that they are usually not there or in the event that they are weak, constructing them then using them restores them.
The Vestibular System can also be the system that helps to construct and develop the brain. Information builds the brain, but all information travels through the VS before entering the brain. The healthier the VS, the clearer the data. It’s all concerning the information – the one thing the brain is consistently monitoring. And the brain monitors all information searching for one thing – safety. Am I protected? That’s the query the brain is all the time asking and filtering the whole lot through. Secure information, like what’s generated from Pressing RESET, or doing cross crawls, “soothes” the nervous system. If the data is protected, the brain doesn’t inhibit the body through the autonomic nervous system. Fight or flight isn’t needed when all information seems protected, predictable, and positive.
Once we don’t live in our design, after we don’t Press RESET with every breath and each step, we’re supplying the message that something is flawed or not protected. Unsafe information causes inhibition from the brain. Secure information is generated by how we move, think, and feel. As is unsafe information. We will restore our nervous system, or soothe it, by moving it from the sympathetic state to the parasympathetic state by engaging in our design.
Being conversant in the RESETs, you’ve probably experienced this yourself. Perhaps your body has been stressed and drained during your strength training sessions. Likely, your mind has also been drained during your training sessions. By Pressing RESET during your training session, you provided a drained brain and a drained body with protected, soothing information. You provided a possibility to take your nervous system out of fight or flight mode to “i can thrive” mode. And also you likely noticed a difference in your subsequent sets or exercises. Perhaps you felt stronger and refreshed. You moved well with ease after you pressed reset and your workout looked as if it would improve with each set. That is how it really works. You might be experiencing your nervous system responding to the resets. The movements cannot be energizing your muscles, movements take energy. As an alternative, they’re removing the stress out of your nervous system.
When the data coming in is protected, the “outformation” is optimized and the performance is elevated. We’re designed to generate protected information on a regular basis. Every breath and step or movement of the top is a message of “protected/not protected.”
The more we generate protected information, the more we also myelinate all those neural connections which can be involved in those movement patterns and thought processes. Conversely, the more we generate unsafe information, the more we cement those neural connections as well. We construct a nervous system that spends more time within the survive state (sympathetic mode) or we construct a nervous system that spends more time within the thrive state (parasympathetic mode). We are actually the creators of our own nervous system.
Anyway, commonly activating the VS because it is made to be activated, respiratory properly, and living in our gait pattern together with midline crossing movements – all of these items either construct, restore, refresh, or soothe the nervous system and take away the neural inhibitions that the brain places on the body.
