Nondual Guided Meditation by Michael Taft

A lot of you may have been highly trained in vipassana meditation. Vipassana is a word in Pali (a dead language used only in ancient Buddhist scriptures) which implies “investigation” or “special insight.” The cognate word in Sanskrit (utilized in Vajrayana in addition to Hindu Tantra) is Vipashyana, meaning essentially the identical thing. We use our meditative awareness to see “things as they are surely,” and that’s how we get special insight into our experience.

Typically, vipassana is practiced in a dualistic manner. I, the viewer, over here (on the correct, say) and doing vipassana on a object, like my respiratory sensations, over there (on the left). The viewer and the viewed are seen as separate. Moreover, when doing vipassana, we are likely to be investigating the “three marks of existence” — i.e. impermanence, non-self, and unsatisfactoriness.

Vipashyana, however, is practiced in a nondual manner. There is no such thing as a “me over here” taking a look at at “thing over there.” There is no such thing as a must fabricate a viewer, or a thing being viewed. Fairly, experiences arise in awareness, and awareness simply notices them, from inside and around them. There is no such thing as a separation between awareness and experience—they’re points of the identical awareness. And as a substitute of taking a look at the three marks, awareness is solely noticing the emptiness of the experiences arising—i.e. the indisputable fact that they’re a form of mental construction in-and-of awareness.

So, though the 2 words vipassana and vipashyana each mean doing investigation to get special insight, the method involved is de facto quite different.
