Nondual Guided Meditation by Michael Taft

The typical person spends almost their entire waking adult life trapped contained in the constructs of thoughts and the personality. We imagine that we’re our thoughts; we imagine that we’re our ego. This belief, nonetheless, is entirely unfaithful. Our pristine awareness exists outside of thought and ego entirely. The truth is, thought and ego occur as activities that arise inside our awareness, not the opposite way around.

After all, there’s nothing fallacious with pondering. We’d like it to plan and to navigate the complexities of life. There may be also nothing fallacious with our ego function; we’d like it to interact successfully with other humans. So thought and ego, in and of themselves, are tremendous.

The issue is once we imagine that we ARE our thoughts; and we ARE our ego. Thoughts are only mental constructs, which don’t in any way constitute and identity. The ego is only a deeper mental construct, composed of each thoughts (mainly the story we tell ourselves about our likes, dislikes, and private history) and various emotions. Our identity can’t be present in thoughts. Our identity can’t be present in the ego. They are only functions awareness uses to navigate the world.

This difference makes all of the difference. When we are able to allow pondering to occur, but not BE the pondering, we experience great freedom. When we are able to allow the ego to do its thing, but not BE the ego, we experience tremendous liberation from suffering.

Locate your viewpoint in the attention which knows thoughts and ego. Observe them from this awareness, and you’ll begin to taste this deep, abiding freedom and ease.
