As a mindfulness-based registered dietitian, I’m obsessed with the facility of mindful eating to remodel not only our personal relationship with food but in addition our impact on the environment — merging mindful eating and sustainability.

Mindful eating involves listening to the current moment while listening to our body’s needs and it could include becoming aware of sustainable food decisions. In this text, we’ll explore Mindful Eating and Sustainability and the way mindful eating can profit the environment, reduce our carbon footprint, and promote sustainability.

What’s Mindful Eating?

Mindful eating is the practice of listening to your food and your body in a non-judgmental way. It involves being fully present during meals, savoring each bite, and listening to your body’s signals of hunger and fullness. The goal of mindful eating is to bring awareness to your eating habits, reduce stress around food, and increase your enjoyment of eating.

Mindful Eating and Sustainability: How Selecting Your Food Mindfully Can Profit the Environment

Since selecting to live “off-grid” a number of years ago — we’re operating our home entirely off of solar energy — I’ve felt more connected to nature than ever. I experience profound gratitude and motivation to support the land we get to call home, and the earth all of us get to call home.

Being more connected to nature, growing my very own food, tending to our forest livestock, and supporting natural resources, has also modified my relationship with food. Mindful eating has one other layer of appreciation as I can clearly see and know where my food is coming from, having a greater connection to more local farmers to support their gardens and growing practices while reducing our carbon footprint.

Now, you don’t have to live “off-grid” or within the forest like I decide to, all of us can take small steps to interact in additional sustainable food decisions, and mindfully eat with sustainability in mind.

How Can Mindful Eating Profit the Environment?

  1. Reduces Food Waste: Mindful eating will help reduce food waste by encouraging us to concentrate to the quantity of food we devour and select portion sizes that match our appetites. By reducing food waste, we also can reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to food production, transportation, and disposal.
  2. Supports Local and Sustainable Agriculture: Mindful eating can encourage us to decide on locally grown and sustainably sourced foods, which may reduce the environmental impact of food transportation and support local communities.
  3. Reduces Energy Consumption: By selecting whole foods that require minimal processing and plastic packaging, we will reduce energy consumption related to food processing, transportation, and storage.
  4. Encourages Plant-Based Eating: Mindful eating can encourage us to decide on plant-based options, which have a lower carbon footprint than animal products. Plant-based eating also can support biodiversity, reduce deforestation, and reduce water usage.
  5. Supports Ethical Food Practices: Mindful eating can encourage us to decide on foods which can be produced using ethical and sustainable practices, comparable to fair trade and organic farming. By supporting ethical food practices, we will promote sustainability and support local communities (and bee populations).
